Presence
Soderbergh tests his creative boundaries through this nifty ghostly tale filmed completely from the viewpoint of the spirit. When a household including mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe settles into their fresh home, the lens – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. Chloe seems conscious of the ghostly being, and it looks like defensive toward her. Yet what is the reason? It's a fun idea that remains concise, featuring a surprise you might not see coming. This Saturday, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy
Nicolas Cage wholeheartedly adopts his eccentric image through this meta comedy caper. This Creepy Thriller
The director's locked-room horror holds up well even without a follow-up. Located in 1970s Colorado, a series of kidnappings has rendered the children frightened. After Finney is taken by the villain and held captive in a dungeon, he anticipates a fatal end. Yet the old telephone mounted nearby keeps ringing, with eerie communicators giving advice, and the prophetic visions of Gwen, his sister might rescue him. An effective horror. October 11th, nighttime, on Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the battle between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for greed in Michael Showalter's delightfully tacky biopic about the fallen TV preacher plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield acts as the greedy Jim, who states early on, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye commence monetising the American public's spiritual convictions. It's a riot of tacky decor, overdone appearance and hypocrisy, though Chastain succeeds to present the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, 1.15am, on Film4
