Federal Reserve Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
