Champions League Action This Evening: Marseille v Newcastle & More

Greetings to another evening of exciting European Cup soccer. Nine matches are set for tonight, including three English clubs in play. Chelsea take on Barça in the key match of the night, whilst Newcastle travel to the French side and City welcome Leverkusen.

League Table

We're at the halfway stage of the league stage, meaning the table is beginning to form. All six English sides are currently in the top 12, but there are only two points between 5th and 16th place, so there's a hint of snakes and ladders about the whole thing. Everything is to play for.

Past Meetings

The sole past encounter between Marseille and Newcastle was the Uefa Cup semifinal of 2004, won by an rising superstar from CĂ´te d'Ivoire. Manchester City and Bayer Leverkusen have never met before. Barcelona and Chelsea have some past encounters.

Early Match Updates

Just one goal during the opening period of the two early games. Dahl's 6th-minute sizzler has given Jose Mourinho’s Benfica a 1-0 lead away to the Dutch side.

Newcastle’s Trip to Marseille

Although The Magpies traveled to the south of France fresh from their restorative two-one home English top-flight win over Manchester City on the weekend, and having defeated Union SG, the Portuguese side and Athletic Bilbao in the European Cup, their only away victory since early April came in Brussels at Union Saint-Gilloise.

It's not that Howe was overly keen to talk about the mental side of this away form issue. “The European Cup is distinct from Premier League games,” said the coach, whose team are sixth in the Champions League standings, with nine points from a available 12 and automatic progression to the last 16 nearly secured. “I am not sure if you can draw parallels between them.”
